چکیده

GPS-Squitter is a system concept that merges the capabilities of Automatic Dependent Surveillance (ADS) and the Mode S beacon radar. The result is an ktegraurd concept for seamless surveillance and data link that permits equipped aimaft to participate in A D S or beacon ground envinwlments. This offers many possibilities for transition from beacon to ADS-based surveillance. This paper briefly defines the GPS-Squitter concept and its principal applications. The thrust of the paper is the presentation of surface and airborne surveillance measurements made at Hanscom Field in Bedford, Massachusetts and at the Logan International Airport in Boston. In each case the measurements show the excellent surveillance paformance provided by this concept.

Aircraft Surveillance Based on GPS Position Broadcasts from Mode S Beacon Transponders

Flight testing of a new air surveillance concept, GPS-Squitter, began during the past year. It integrates GPS receivers with the existing secondary surveillance radar beacon equipment carried by most aircraft. Simple, inexpensive, non-scanning ground stations listen for GPS position reports broadcast by the Mode S beacon transponders on the aircraft and send them on to air traffic control facil...

A Testbed for Studying Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) Based Range and Positioning Performance to Support Alternative Position Navigation and Timing (APNT)

As air traffic continues to grow, the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) plays an increasingly important role in enabling the air space to efficiently handle the increase load. In fact, it will be the primary and often the only system capable of supporting key capabilities for the future airspace. However, GNSS is vulnerable to radio frequency interference (RFI) and spoofing, so an alter...

Evaluation & Comparison of Ranging Using Universal Access Transceiver ( UAT ) and 1090 MHz Mode S Extended

The FAA Alternative Position Navigation and Timing effort is developing technologies to provide navigation service capable of sustaining operations in the event of the loss of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). APNT will utilize existing ground infrastructure to support this capability. One effort is to examine the use of the Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) ground in...
